Saturday 9th June 2018 saw the 53rd annual Great Knaresborough Bed Race took place, and Harrison Spinks were once again proudly sponsoring the event. Entering two teams this year we were eager to improve on last year’s time of 23:44 which would be no easy feat!
Our challengers for this task were James Noble, Connor Hambrey, Ruairi Giles, Darren Rogers, Zak Kennedy, Charlie Brown, Amelia Whitaker, Lee Grange, Chris Hunneybell, Elliott Holloway, Danny Simpson, Dan Hudson, Andy Pearce and Julie Cameron. And for many of them this was their first Knaresborough Bed Race!
The theme for 2018 was ‘A Night at the Theatre’ which meant all the teams were ready to put on an amazing show! There were beds dressed as plays from all throughout theatre history, from Grease to School of Rock and Little Shop of Horrors to Aladdin. Our theme, as voted for by the wider business, was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the floats brilliantly represented the theme as the chocolate factory itself and the grandparent’s bed. Our teams looked the part with plenty of Oompa Loompas, Willy Wonka himself and even a blown up blueberry Violet Beauregarde.
Around midday the winner of the of the best dressed float was announced, another Charlie and the Chocolate factory themed float designed by 1st Scriven Scouts, congratulations to them for winning for the second year in a row!
Thousands of spectators lined the streets for the procession, waving along to the floats as they passed down from Knaresborough castle all through the streets to Conyngham Hall where the start line awaited the runners. After removing the decorations and limbering up the teams were ready for the 2.4 mile race ahead of them, and the sunshine managed to poke its way through, normally pleasant but proving an extra dimension of difficulty for the runners.
Being 72nd and 73rd in order our teams had a wait for their start time but once they were off they flew up the hill around the course. The hills and cobbled streets proved to be a challenge but not one that our brave teams couldn’t overcome! Towards the end of the course was the infamous river crossing through the river Nidd, a normally quiet and peaceful part of Knaresborough however today it was the obstacle for the nearly-hundred teams wanting to surge their way through. Neck deep waters and steep, muddy banks made crossing with the beds difficult but not impossible and they were soon out and towards the home straight.
Team 1 crossed the line first, with an excellent time of 19:42.8 despite a 30 second penalty, and team 2 followed closely behind with a time of 20:35.1. This was an improvement of around 3 minutes from 2017 which is a fantastic achievement!
Congratulations to both of our teams and thank you to everyone for helping out both on the day and in the build-up. We’ll be planning soon for next year’s Bed Race and to put on an even bigger show than this year, we look forward to seeing you there!
