Sustainably Grown Hemp from Yorkshire

Nestled in the heart of Yorkshire, Harrison Spinks operates the UK’s largest hemp-growing farm. In collaboration with a local farming cooperative, we cultivate hemp with a shared commitment to sustainability, innovation, and regenerative agriculture.

UK-Grown, Zero-Waste Hemp

At Harrison Spinks, we manage every step of the hemp cultivation process — from selecting premium seeds to planting, nurturing, harvesting, retting, and processing. This hands-on approach ensures maximum quality and consistency in every fibre.

Hemp is a naturally zero-waste crop, and we embrace this principle by using every part of the plant to create a range of products:

  • Hemp Shiv – A lightweight, absorbent material used for animal bedding and, when mixed with lime, a strong, breathable construction material
  • Hemp Animal Bedding – Ultra-absorbent, low-dust bedding ideal for horses, livestock and small animals
  • Hemp fibre pads – Breathable, compostable mats used in horticulture, packaging, insulation and more

Hemp Shiv

Hemp shiv (or hurd) is the woody core of the hemp stalk. Once separated from the fibrous outer layer, it becomes a lightweight, absorbent, and cellulose-rich material ideal for sustainable construction.

In green building, hemp shiv is mixed with lime to form hempcrete—a natural, breathable insulation that regulates temperature and humidity while locking in carbon. It is mould- and pest-resistant, non-toxic, and used in a range of eco-friendly projects, including homes featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs.

Hemp Animal Bedding

Hemp is widely used as animal bedding thanks to its:

  • High absorbency, which keeps stalls drier and more hygienic
  • Low dust content, ideal for animals with respiratory sensitivities
  • Biodegradability, breaking down cleanly in composting systems
  • Natural resistance to mould and pests, reducing the need for chemicals

Soft and cushioned, hemp bedding provides added comfort for horses, chickens, rabbits, and small pets. It’s a clean, sustainable alternative to wood shavings or straw, increasingly favoured by eco-conscious farmers and pet owners.

Hemp Fibre Bales

Made from the long, strong bast fibres extracted from the outer layer of the hemp stalk. These fibres are processed, cleaned and baled into compact, easy-to-handle 20KG bales.

Farm 0041

Naturally durable, moisture-wicking, and breathable, hemp fibre is ideal for a range of industrial and commercial applications including:

  • Textiles – A sustainable raw material for non-woven fabrics.
  • Equestrian and animal bedding – Due to its high absorbency, and natural resistance to mould and pests, hemp fibre is ideal for horses and small animals.
  • Building materials – Blended with other fibres for acoustic and thermal insulation applications.

Hemp Fibre Pads

Made from the strong bast fibres of the hemp plant, our hemp fibre pads are durable, breathable, and moisture-regulating, making them suitable for multiple industries:

  • Horticulture – Ideal for growing microgreens, seedlings, and hydroponic systems. The pads retain water while allowing air flow, supporting strong root growth.
  • Packaging & Logistics – Used for thermal insulation, shock absorption, and humidity control when transporting temperature-sensitive or delicate items.
  • Construction & Automotive – Effective thermal and acoustic insulation, offering a non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and sustainable solution for interiors.
