Guides & Advice

We understand that buying a bed can be an exhausting proposition if you don’t know where to begin. That is why we have developed our ‘Mattress Buying Guide’ — a series of articles that will lead you through the world of beds and mattresses, and help you to feel confident that you know what to look for. Let’s start with pocket sprung mattresses; something we definitely know a thing or two about. But what exactly is a pocket spring mattress, what are the benefits and why should you invest in one?

What is a pocket sprung mattress?

A pocket sprung mattress contains individual springs, each sewn into its own pocket of fabric. This means the springs in a pocket sprung mattress work completely independently of one another and can provide your body with better pressure relieving support.

What are the differences between pocket sprung, open coil and memory foam mattresses?

Traditional, open coil mattresses consist of a spring system where each individual spring is connected and lined together within a wire frame. A standard double open coil mattress will contain 200-400 springs that move as one unit, so if you toss and turn in your sleep, you are more likely to disturb your partner. Pocket sprung mattresses tend to have a much higher spring count than open coil mattresses thus offering greater support and as pocket springs move independently from one another, they will contour to your body more effectively.

A memory foam mattress is an alternative to a pocket sprung mattress or an open coil mattress. The heat of your body softens the memory foam, allowing the mattress to adapt to your shape. Some people swear by memory foam mattresses but the memory foam doesn't allow your body to breathe, meaning you will get extremely hot in the night.

"You must always invest in good shoes and a high quality bed, as if you are not in one, you are in the other."

How many springs are there in a pocket sprung mattress?

A typical, king size pocket sprung mattress contains at least 600 springs. It’s unlikely you’ll see a pocket sprung mattress with more than 2,000 core pocket springs. Higher spring counts can be achieved by utilising layer technology or mini springs.

However, thanks to our patented spring technology, our mattresses can contain anywhere from 2,000 right up to 30,000 total springs. At the heart of every mattress is our Revolution pocket spring system, consisting of a small spring sitting inside of a larger spring. Layered above this are sheets of our High Density mini pocket springs. With between 2000 and 4000 pocket springs in each separate layer of a king-size mattress, these springs are extremely flexible and work completely independently of each other, adapting to each person's unique shape and sleeping position. This technology allows us to reach the highest spring counts possible to ensure ultimate comfort.

How many springs do I need?

Generally speaking, the more pocket springs you’re sleeping on, the better. The higher the number of springs, the greater the support you will receive from your mattress. This can reduce your sleep disturbance and the aches and pains you may experience in the morning. As a general rule, aim for as many pocket springs as you can within your budget.

What are the benefits of a pocket sprung mattress?

Perfect spinal alignment is key to a goodnight’s sleep. As pocket springs move independently from one another, the mattress can adapt to your individual body shape providing you tailored support where you need it the most. It also means that you can move about in your sleep without the whole mattress responding (and disturbing your partner!),

Pocket sprung mattresses are designed to relieve the build-up of pressure points as the weight of your body is distributed across many different springs.

How firm are pocket sprung mattresses?

Typically, pocket sprung mattresses come with a medium or firm option. Harrison Spinks mattresses come with three tension options; gently supportive, medium support or firm support. All we do is change the thickness and gauge of the wire itself and this gives you your desired firmness. If you and your partner are different weights, we can split your mattress tension so one side is gentler/firmer than the other.

How are our mattresses different from others?

At Harrison Spinks, we make pocket sprung mattresses, but with a difference. Our award-winning Revolution springs offer variable levels of support. The outer spring offers supreme levels of comfort, whilst the inside spring engages underneath the heavier parts of the body, ensuring you are fully supported where you need it most. Our High Density mini pocket springs are then layered on top to further disperse your body’s pressure points.

Not only do our Harrison Spinks mattresses provide award-winning support, but we use 100% natural materials for the fillings of our mattresses, which have inherent temperature regulating properties, keeping you cool through the night.
